چکیده

In this paper we are discussing the specific problems that occur in the MAC layer for WLAN's with beamforming, such as hidden nodes, neighbor discovery, setting beamforming coefficients in MIMO systems and training sequences. We compare the solutions in MAC protocols based on different extensions of the IEEE 802.11 standard, on HIPERLAN/2 and in the MIMAX project.

Survey of Transmission Methods and Efficiency Using MIMO Technologies for Wireless LAN Systems

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission is attracting interest for increasing the transmission rates of wireless systems. This paper surveys MIMO transmission technology from the viewpoints of transmission methods, access control schemes, and total transmission efficiency. We consider wireless local area networks (WLAN) systems that use MIMO technology; moreover, we focus on multiuse...

NICE - a decentralized medium access control using neighborhood information classification and estimation for multimedia applications in ad hoc 802.11 wireless LANs

The desired properties of a medium access control (MAC) protocol in mobile ad hoc network (MANET) include (1) meet quality of service (QoS) requirements for real-time nodes, (2) be decentralized, (3) achieve fairness from viewpoint of throughput or energy consumption, and (4) be immune to the hidden node problem. Though there have been numerous proposed MAC protocols for the IEEE 802.11 WLAN, f...

On the Impact of Beamforming on Interference in Wireless Mesh Networks

For a wireless mesh network with randomly placed devices, we analyze the impact of beamforming on the statistics of the signal attenuation, interference, and SIR between devices. We show that simple random direction beamforming performs equally well as omni-directional transmission if no MAC layer is present. Optimized beamforming between transmitter-receiver pairs yields a much better SIR than...
